Stemhead fitting cracks PDF Print E-mail

Last year I discovered a crack in stem head fitting, and a few days I took it off for my friend Mika to repair in his welding shop. It turned out the crack went all the way through, running along the welding between the horizontal plate and the part running down the bow. The new repair was finished beautifully, but in the process, two more cracks where discovered along the base of the vertical piece to which the forestay is fixed.

Mainsheet system PDF Print E-mail

The existing mainsheet setup was a miserable affair. Although initially fairly standard, with a traveller on the bridgedeck, hauling on the sheet was done by a self tailing winch that was mounted so that the sheet very easily came loose. If you touched it when moving in the cockpit. Or looked at it. Or sneezed anywhere on the boat…

The obvious thing to do would be to mount a violin block with a cam cleat. However, I really, really wanted to be able to control the mainsheet from behind the wheel. So, following the current fad, I decided to try the "German mainsheet system" (aka "Admiral's cup" mainsheet system).

Diesel heater PDF Print E-mail

When I bought the boat, it came with a bulkhead mounted Taylor kerosene heater. This is an excellent little heater, but did not have enough power to keep us warm in late fall or early spring at the latitudes of our normal cruising grounds. In order to extend our cruising season, and at the same time be free to anchor or dock where there was no electricity, we needed a more powerful heater. The new heater should be able to provide a comfortable temperature throughout the boat, should not make noice, should be simple and robust, and should not use electrical power.

Anchoring system PDF Print E-mail

The original anchoring solution was inadequate, simply because there was no windlass.  This was previously solved by using a too small QCR anchor, which could be weighted by hand (given time), but which could not be trusted in a blow. Not my favorite solution.

 

Much better, then, to go for:

  • A new, concave, anchor:  Rocna, 25 kg. (a bit over-sized?)
  • A new bow roller (correspondingly over-sized)
  • 50 meters of 10 mm galvanized chain (over-sized, but 8 mm will not take a rope splice)
  • A powerful windlass (over-sized to fit anchor and chain)
  • Easy anchoring, no worries

 

Of course, installing all this hardware was no small job.
